I am grateful for the wonderful childhood I had growing up on the slopes of Haleakalā Mountain on the island of Maui. The pastures of the Haleakalā Ranch were my backyard from Makawao town up to the summit. Music filled the air from my father and his friends on the ranch. The paniolo or Hawaiian cowboys felt a deep connection to the land and often celebrating this with the songs they played. This recording is in tribute to my father and the other paniolo on the ranch who inspired me to play music as a child. I can still hear their songs and laughter drifting through the misty upcountry air.
The beautiful painting of my father, Bard Robert Peterson, is by the brilliant Maui-based artist Jan Kasprzycki. Jan and his wife would spend time with my father and the family on trips exploring Haleakalā mountain from Olinda to Kaupo. We would often visit a small cabin on the ranch called the Peanut House. The painting shows my father doing what he loved in one of his favorite places at a high vantage point overlooking Waiopai and Kaupo on the South East Coast of Maui. It captures his spirit which is the inspiration for the music on this recording.
