Details.
Slack Key Jazz is the first recording of classic jazz paired with the nahenahe (sweet) sounds of solo slack key guitar. From Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin and Dave Brubeck to George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Norah Jones; the great American songbook is poetically retold with the resonant sounds of slack key. Original pieces affirm Jeff’s creative voice and classic Hawaiian songs are spun with the freedom and eloquence of contemporary and even Brazillian Jazz.
Slack Key guitar was born in the 1830s when Hawaiian cowboys introduced innovative sounds by changing traditional guitar tunings. Later in the 1920s and 30s, the strains of the swing era swept across the Pacific and reached the shores of Waikiki. On this recording, Jeff Peterson, an artist featured on the first ever Grammy Award-Winning recording for Best Hawaiian Music Album, reinterprets many of the finest jazz standards with slack key stylings. The result is an inspired and diverse expression of the spirit of aloha unique to the islands and people of Hawai`i.
