The nahenahe sound of slack key guitar—its deep tunings and soothing resonance—has long brought a sense of peace, grounding, and aloha to our lāhui. More than just music, kī hō‘alu carries the stories, places, and people of Hawai‘i in every note.
Born from the paniolo traditions and nurtured over generations, slack key has evolved with each musician who has embraced and passed it on—remaining rooted in our ʻike kupuna while also reflecting the unique voices of today.
The mele on this recording are inspired by the ‘āina, the mo‘olelo, and the pilina we share here at home. They are offered with aloha and the hope that this music brings you comfort, joy, and a deeper sense of connection to our island home.
Born and raised on the island of Maui, two-time Grammy Award nominee and fourteen-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Jeff Peterson has traveled the world sharing his passion for music and the aloha spirit. His signature guitar style is featured in the Oscar-winning film The Descendants and on the first Hawaiian album to win a Grammy Award. He recently composed and performed the first Concerto for Slack Key Guitar and Orchestra and is dedicated to preserving the tradition of Hawaiian slack key guitar.
